The Nagaland Framework Agreement 2015: A Step Towards Peace in Northeast India

The Nagaland Framework Agreement 2015 is an important milestone towards achieving peace in Northeast India. The Agreement was signed on August 3, 2015, between the Government of India and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The NSCN is a rebel group that has been fighting for an independent Nagalim, which includes parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. The conflict between the Indian government and the NSCN has been going on for more than six decades and has claimed thousands of lives.

The Nagaland Framework Agreement 2015 is an attempt to bring an end to this long-standing conflict. The Agreement is based on the principle of “shared sovereignty” between the Indian government and the Nagas. It acknowledges the unique history and identity of the Nagas and promises to grant them greater autonomy within the Indian federal system.

The Agreement also pledges to address the socio-economic and political issues that have fueled the Naga rebellion. It promises to allocate funds for the development of Nagaland and other Naga-inhabited areas and to address the grievances of the Naga people.

The Nagaland Framework Agreement 2015 has been widely welcomed by the people of Nagaland and other northeastern states. It is seen as a major step towards ending the insurgency in the region and bringing lasting peace.

However, there are also concerns about the implementation of the Agreement. The NSCN is not the only Naga rebel group, and other groups have not been included in the Agreement. There are also concerns about how the shared sovereignty between the Indian government and the Nagas will work in practice.

Despite these concerns, the Nagaland Framework Agreement 2015 is a significant achievement in the quest for peace in Northeast India. It is a testament to the power of dialogue and negotiation in resolving conflicts and building lasting peace. It is now up to the Indian government and the Nagas to ensure that the Agreement is implemented in a way that benefits all stakeholders and leads to a brighter future for the people of Northeast India.
